White Hart Hotel Hawera
The site has housed Hawera’s iconic pub since 1876, when Thomas Lloyd opened the original Empire Hotel. After a fire in 1884 and a rebuild, a grand new timber‑built structure opened in 1909, designed by architect J E Rowe, boasting 36 elaborately furnished rooms, Wunderlich steel ceilings and electric lighting . In 1923 James N. Anderson renamed it the White Hart, and in the 1930s the ground‑floor bars and balcony were beautifully updated . Heritage-listed and still in original use, the White Hart is a cherished piece of Hawera’s timber-town legacy .
